Today we released backend and website changes that lay the groundwork for a major update to Truple's end-to-end encryption. We're sharing this early so you know what's coming. Once the update is live across all of our apps, we'll publish a more official announcement.

The new system is called nc1 encryption. Everything that came before it is now referred to as legacy encryption.

What's changing
* No more e2ee passcodes. The biggest change is how you unlock your encrypted data. Once the rollout is complete, you won't need to remember or share an end-to-end encryption passcode anymore. Instead, you'll use your device's own unlock method, via a passkey backed by your fingerprint, pattern, or PIN. It's the same thing you already do to unlock your phone or computer.
* Stronger encryption. nc1 upgrades the underlying encryption algorithms and adds partial post-quantum protection, so your data is better protected against both current and future threats.

Together, these changes should make end-to-end encryption both more secure and a lot easier to live with.

How the rollout works
We're releasing app updates now that add support for nc1 encryption. We are looking for beta testers, so if you're interested please reach out. As each of your apps updates, it will automatically switch over to nc1 once you've set it up on your account.

The apps are rolling out in this order:
1. Android
2. iOS
3. macOS
4. Kindle
5. Chrome extension
6. Windows
7. Linux

If all goes well, we expect every app to have nc1 support by the beginning of December.

What you need to do
For now, nothing. Keep your apps updated, and we'll follow up with setup instructions once nc1 is available across your devices.
